Courage to Pivot

Why does it take courage to pivot?

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s this; sometimes our plans are forced to change. How we frame that reality takes courage. We can label our efforts as failures and beat ourselves up over the outcome. We can live in the fear of other people’s judgements and expectations of how we should respond when plans need to change. Or, we can be brave. We can assess our “why,” survey the options and pivot in order to stay the course that aligns with our priorities.

Pivoting is hard.

Pivoting requires flexibility.

Pivoting helps us move forward.

Failure is quitting altogether. Pulling out. Closing up. Refusing to try an alternative.

Pivoting is NOT failure. Instead it’s choosing another path to success. But don’t underestimate the underbelly of this skill. When we’ve met the crossroads of things not going according to plan, we will experience loss. And where there is loss, we need to allow ourselves to grieve. This helps clear the emotional decks to develop fresh ground for new positivity.

Changing directions, finding the pivot takes lots of energy; emotional, mental, and physical that’s why it takes courage.

When is it time to pivot?

  • When what you’ve committed to, has changed drastically.

  • When the “why” behind your commitment has changed.

  • When the plan no longer aligns with your goals.

These might all be opportunities to pivot.
